Maintaining an older Next.js site

There is a particular feeling you get when opening a Next.js project that has not been touched in a while.
At first it looks familiar. Pages, components, content, config. Then you run the install, check the lockfile, build the project, and the quiet little warnings begin. A package is deprecated. The framework has moved on. The audit output is louder than anyone wanted. A config value is hard-coded in a place that used to be fine.
That does not mean the site is bad. It means time passed.
Web projects age even when nobody changes them. Dependencies age, browser behavior changes, APIs evolve, and the content starts to feel frozen.
How I like to approach it
I prefer a maintenance pass in layers:
- Make sure the site still builds.
- Fix obvious warnings and broken config.
- Update content that users can see.
- Apply safe dependency updates.
- Document the larger upgrade path.
The order matters. If you jump straight into a major framework upgrade, you can spend hours untangling problems before you have improved anything visible. Sometimes that is necessary, but often the site benefits from a calmer first pass.
An older Next.js site can still be perfectly useful. The goal is to understand the risk honestly. What is safe to update now? What needs a migration branch? Which API routes are exposed? Is image optimization involved? Is the deployment platform patching anything for you?
Maintenance is not glamorous, but it is respectful. It respects the users, the owner, and the future developer who will open the repo after you.
Every project deserves that once in a while.
